The most important item in the day-of document folder: the original marriage license
There's one document on your wedding day that, if forgotten, renders the whole event pointless. That's not a metaphor, legally you wouldn't actually be married.
The original marriage license
If you're signing the license after the ceremony on the day, that piece of paper has to be there. Without it:
- The officiant has nothing to sign
- The witnesses have nothing to sign
- There's no document to return to the county for recording (see item 9 of the checklist)
- You held a ceremony and are legally still single
Also, a license is valid for only about 90 days (see item 3 of the checklist). If forgetting to bring it drags things past expiry, you pay again and repeat the process.
Leaving the license at home genuinely happens. There's far too much to carry on a wedding morning, and that sheet of paper looks like any other document.
What else goes in the folder
- The officiant's and witnesses' detailsFields like names and addresses that go on the license are easy to mess up if you ask on the spot, and making a mistake means going through an amendment process (see item 68 of the checklist).
- Every vendor contract and phone number. printed, not only on a phone
- A printed day-of timeline (see item 39 of the checklist)
- Tip envelopesIt is best to pack them separately and label them with names in advance (see item 53 of the checklist).
Why print it
On the day your phone will be: borrowed for photos, out of battery, handed to the best man, or left in the green room. And the moment you need to call the florist is generally the moment you can't find it.
Paper doesn't run out of battery and doesn't need unlocking.
Who holds it
The day-of coordinator or the best man, not the couple.
The same principle as the emergency kit (item 50), the rings (item 47) and the gift money (item 114): on the day, the couple shouldn't be carrying anything that needs safeguarding.
How to do it
- Pack it the night before, into one designated folder
- Assign one person, and tell them explicitly "this bag stays with you all day"
- Check again on the morning of the wedding, especially the license.
Use a folder in an obvious color that won't be confused with anything else. Dozens of bags move around on a wedding day.
If the license is already signed
Some couples get married at the courthouse first and hold the wedding ceremony later (see item 67 of the checklist). In that case, the license went back to the county long ago and there is nothing to bring on the day. That is one practical advantage of getting married first:no paperwork to worry about on the wedding day at all.
In one line
Put the license in a designated folder the night before, hand it to a designated person, and check it again in the morning. These three steps combined take under five minutes of work.
