Finding hair and makeup in America: confirm they've worked with Asian brides

This is where Chinese couples marrying in America most often run into trouble and find hardest to fix. Hair and makeup problems usually only surface on the wedding morning, when you no longer have other options.

Why it needs specific confirmation

Asian hair and skin tones are handled differently from Western ones.

• Hair textureAsian hair is typically thicker and straighter, so Western curled styles don't hold well in it. Set in the morning, they often collapse by noon.
• Skin undertone: Asian skin usually skews yellow, while the foundation shades and highlighting logic American artists are used to are built for pink undertones. Get the undertone wrong and the face reads grey or orange in photos
• Eye shape: the technique for monolids and inner double lids is completely different from deep-set Western eyes

These aren't things raw skill overcomes. They're a matter of experienceOnly someone who has done it knows which setting products, which shades, and which techniques to use.

How to confirm

Look for Asian clients in their portfolio. Not asking "do you work with Asian brides?" (nobody says no), looking at the photos.

Specific questions to ask:

"Could I see a few Asian brides you've done?"
"How do you set curls in Asian hair?"

The answer to the second separates the experienced from the inexperienced very quickly.

A trial is mandatory, not optional

Do the trial 1–3 months before the wedding, and bring the hairpieces and veil you'll actually wear.

A veil's weight changes where the hairstyle needs support, and the position of a hairpiece determines how the style is built. Without them, the look you trial might not work on the day.

Photograph the trial

One set in natural light and one indoors.

Two reasons:

1. Light lies to youMakeup that looks perfect under salon lights can look too heavy or off-color in daylight. You will experience both lighting conditions on your wedding day.
2. You need a reference to communicate fromSaying "just like last time" is a useless instruction, but pulling out a photo and saying "a bit lighter here" is perfectly clear.

Cost and scope

The bride typically runs $300–$800, with on-site touch-ups extra 💵 (market rate, varying widely by region).

Also budget for:

• Style changesIf you are changing outfits or hairstyles partway through.
• Bridesmaids and both mothersMultiply that by the headcount, as this expense is commonly underestimated.
• Touch-ups during the dayHaving the hair and makeup artist stay on standby costs extra.

Chinese weddings often include a tea ceremony and outfit changes, so there are usually more style changes than at an American wedding. Spell that out when getting quotes.

Allow enough time

Hair and makeup takes 2–3 hours, longer for a group. It's the most easily delayed segment of the morning, and any delay pushes everything after it back (see item 39 of the checklist).

One quick reminder: during this time, the bride will be sitting still and easily forgets to eat. Remember to eat breakfast (see item 51 on the checklist).
