Four lines, 29 stops, each one written up.

In the order you'll reach them. Each stop lists the checklist items (marked free or full version), our guides, official sources and useful platforms. Pick your situation above and the stops that don't apply to you fade out.

A

THE LEGAL PATH

License & certificate

A legal marriage happens in three steps: get the license, hold the ceremony, and have the license returned to the county to be recorded. State law sets the waiting period and how long the license is valid; the county sets the fee and how you book. So look up the rules for the county where the ceremony will happen.

A1

Choosing the state and county

A2

A3

Officiant and witnesses

Your officiant has to qualify under that state's law. Friends or relatives can get ordained online, but some counties require the officiant to register with them first. The number of witnesses varies by state: a California public license needs at least one and allows up to two, and in Colorado the two of you can solemnize your own marriage.

WhoA friend or relative, clergy, a judge, or the county's civil ceremony officiant

Checklist: 2・Guides: 2・Links: 4
A4

The ceremony: courthouse, city hall or your own

A5

Returning the license to the county

After the ceremony, the officiant returns the license to the county within the deadline: 10 days in California, 5 days in New York State. You're not married until it's recorded, so call or check online to confirm.

WhoThe officiant returns it; the County Recorder records it

Checklist: 1・Guides: 1・Links: 2
A6

Marriage certificate (certified copy)

What agencies accept is a certified copy issued by the county, with a raised seal or watermark; photocopies are refused. You'll need it for the name change, the green card and registering in Taiwan, so order 3 to 5 copies at once.

WhoThe County Recorder or Clerk that issued it; in some states, also the state vital records office

THE WEDDING

Wedding & vendors

What kind of wedding you have is up to you; this line lays out the timing, the contracts and the vendors. The venue, the photographer and hair and makeup each take one booking a day, and popular dates are gone a year ahead.

B1

Proposal, rings and engagement

The engagement ring, the engagement shoot, the engagement party and the bachelor and bachelorette parties are the first round of spending. Order wedding rings 3 to 4 months before the wedding, and allow another 4 to 6 weeks for custom work or engraving.

WhoJewelers, an engagement photographer

Checklist: 5・Links: 2
B2

Date, budget and timeline

12 to 18 months out, set the date, budget and guest count, then book the three that go fastest: the venue, the photographer and hair and makeup. Peak season is May to October and Saturdays, so start even earlier for those.

WhoThe two of you, plus a wedding planner or a day-of coordinator

Checklist: 5・Links: 2
B3

Venue and contract

B4

Photographer, hair and makeup, and the vendor team

The photographer, videographer, hair and makeup, florist, music and catering each get their own contract. Once you give catering the final head count, you can usually add but not subtract, so keep the number conservative.

WhoPhotographer, videographer, hair & makeup, florist, DJ or band, caterer

Checklist: 9・Guides: 1・Links: 3
B5

Dress, suits and the wedding party

Order the dress 9 to 12 months before the wedding: a custom gown often takes 6 to 8 months from order to delivery, plus 2 or 3 fittings. Before you ask people to be bridesmaids or groomsmen, tell them clearly what it will cost them.

AFTER THE WEDDING

Paperwork after the wedding

C5

Moving in together: address, home, car

To merge addresses, start with a change of address at usps.com; non-citizens must report a move to USCIS within 10 days. Ask your mortgage lender before adding a name to the house, and sort out the car titles and insurance at the same time.

Checklist: 4・Links: 1
C6

Prenup, wills and property

Sign a prenup at least 30 days before the wedding. In the 9 community property states, including California and Texas, income earned during the marriage is generally split in half; the rules for wills, healthcare proxies and financial powers of attorney vary by state.

STATUS & TAIWAN

Immigration & Taiwan

The spousal green card and registering in Taiwan carry the hardest deadlines on this map: a conditional green card needs the I-751 filed within the 90 days before it expires, and Taiwan's Household Registration Act requires the marriage to be registered within 30 days; check with a household registration office or TECO when that clock starts.

D1

Partner abroad: K-1 or marry first

A US citizen's foreign partner can come on a K-1 fiancé(e) visa, but you must marry within 90 days of entry, with no extensions. If you're already married, filing the I-130 directly is simpler.

WhoUSCIS and US embassies and consulates abroad

Checklist: 2・Guides: 1・Links: 2
D2

Applying for a spousal green card

The core forms are the I-130 and I-485, plus the I-693 medical exam by a USCIS-designated doctor. Start keeping evidence of a bona fide marriage now: joint accounts, a lease, photos together.

WhoUSCIS; for the medical exam, a USCIS-designated civil surgeon

Checklist: 4・Guides: 1・Links: 3
D3

While it's pending: travel, work, moving

If you need to leave the country while the I-485 is pending, get advance parole first, or the case may be treated as abandoned. Report a new address to USCIS within 10 days of moving; updating it in your online account is fastest.

Checklist: 1・Guides: 1・Links: 2
D4

The green card interview

Couples usually attend the interview together at a USCIS field office. Bring the interview notice, your original ID documents and marriage certificate, and the evidence of a shared life you've kept adding since the wedding.

WhoYour local USCIS field office

Checklist: 1・Guides: 1
D5

Conditional green card and the I-751

If you'd been married less than two years when the green card was issued, it's a 2-year conditional green card. File the I-751 within the 90 days before it expires; miss it and you lose lawful status.

WhoUSCIS

Checklist: 1・Guides: 1・Links: 2
D6

Citizenship: the 3-year rule

A green card holder who stays married to and living with a US citizen spouse can apply to naturalize with the N-400 after 3 years, if they meet the residence requirements; the usual wait is 5. With a conditional green card, finish the I-751 first.

Registering the marriage in Taiwan

D8

Taiwan passport, household registration and military service

A Taiwan passport can carry your spouse's surname without first changing your Chinese name in the household register. Men of conscription age with Taiwan household registration should check the National Conscription Agency's current rules before going back.

BY STATE

56 states and territories: where to go.

In most states the marriage license comes from the county, so check the fee, booking and ID rules on the website of the county where the ceremony will be. Certified copies of the certificate come from the county that issued it, and in some states also from the state vital records office.

Registering the marriage in Taiwan? The certificate is authenticated by the TECO office that covers the state that issued it, wherever you live. Office jurisdictions, as published by TECRO

Vital records links checked 2026-08-08 (Delaware, Mississippi and New Hampshire updated 2026-10-27); TECO jurisdictions per TECRO's notice, checked 2026-10-22.

SERVICES / VENDORS AND SERVICES

The vendors a wedding needs, all in one place.

The platform links below are ordinary links, not affiliate links. Each group comes with the matching checklist items: what to ask, which contract clauses to read, and which ways of paying protect you best.

Finding vendors and comparing quotes

Nationwide wedding vendor platforms let you read reviews and compare quotes. Before you sign, go over the contract once more for the total, the service charge and the cancellation terms.

Venues, courthouses and city halls

If you only want the legal part, counties and city halls offer civil ceremonies; a wedding in a park or on a beach needs a separate permit.

Honeymoon

The name on the ticket must match the ID you travel on. Visa-free destinations differ for green card holders and for Taiwan passport holders, so check each one before you go.

AGENCIES / WHO YOU'LL DEAL WITH

From the county to Taiwan's household registration offices, these are the offices you'll deal with.

Next to each office is what you'll go there for. Name changes, immigration and taxes can all be handled directly with the official agency, with no need for a paid filing service. Some county websites don't end in .gov, so the safest way in is through the state or county government's official site.

Both of you go apply for the marriage license together

What to bring

  • Both of you must be there in person, no exceptions
  • Original government-issued photo ID (passport / driver's license / state ID)
  • If divorced: the divorce decree. If widowed: your late spouse's death certificate.
  • Payment: many counties take only cash or check, not credit cards

How long it takes 30 to 60 minutes on site with an appointment; without one you may wait two hours or more, and plenty of counties won't take walk-ins at all.

Common pitfalls

  • This is set by county, not by state. Fees, booking methods, and witness requirements can all differ between counties in the same state.
  • The spelling has to match your ID exactly; fixing a typo later means paying to redo it

FAQ

Does the free version really need no email?

Yes, open it and start. Want to continue on another device? A free account is all it takes.

Is payment secure?

Handled by Stripe. We never see or touch your card number.

Is it a subscription?

No. US$9.90 once, no monthly charges, yours for life.

What does "yours for life" mean?

Once you unlock, your account stays unlocked. Content updates and link fixes show up in your account automatically. You never pay again.

Does the content get updated?

Yes. This is a web tool, not a one-time download. When a link or a rule changes, we update it. You don't re-download anything.

I'm not a U.S. citizen. Can I still use this?

Yes. The checklist covers different status situations, and choosing yours adds the spouse-related items. Actual eligibility, required documents, and immigration rules should still be confirmed with your local government and sources such as USCIS.

What if the rules differ from state to state?

Marriage license procedures can differ by state, county, and city. This checklist doesn't pretend one set of rules covers the whole country. It reminds you what to confirm at each step, and regulatory items link to official sources where possible.

Is this legal or immigration advice?

No. This is an organized reference and a checklist for getting things done. It doesn't replace advice from an attorney, an accountant, or a government agency.

Why isn't this a PDF?

Because rules and official links change. A web version can keep being corrected, and it remembers what you've finished.

We only want to register legally, no wedding. Is this still for us?

Yes. You can focus on the marriage license, the ceremony, the marriage certificate, and the paperwork afterward, and skip the wedding-planning items.

Can we get a refund?

No. The full version is digital content delivered after payment, so we don't offer refunds. The first 30 items are free with no sign-up, so you can read them before deciding whether to buy. If you were charged twice, or the content doesn't open after payment, email weliveinusa.com@gmail.com with the email you used for the purchase and we'll sort it out.

How do we unlock it after paying?

Payment is handled by Stripe. After payment, once you're back on this site, all 130 items open and the email you entered at checkout becomes your account. If they don't open automatically, email weliveinusa.com@gmail.com with the email you used to buy and we'll unlock it by hand.
