A made-to-order gown takes 6–8 months: and if you plan to lose weight, tell the seamstress first
The wedding dress isthe single item where people most easily underestimate the timelinebecause most people approach this with their regular shopping mindset, but ordering a custom dress is not like buying everyday clothes.
The realistic timeline
Ordering a custom dress usually takes 6–8 months from purchase to delivery, plus another 2–3 rounds of alterations.
So you need to place your order 9–12 monthsbefore the wedding date. Working backward:
Wedding Date ← Final Alterations (2–6 weeks before) ← Initial Alterations ← Dress Arrives ← Place Order (9–12 months before) ← Try-ons & Selection (Even earlier)
If you are only four months away from your wedding date right now, going the custom route might already be too late, so you should switch to buying off-the-rack or renting. This is not a bad thing, it just means your options will be a bit different.
If you plan to lose weight, definitely speak up first
This is the most practical piece of advice on this topic.
A lot of people secretly plan to "lose 5 kilograms before the wedding" without telling the tailor first. As a result, the dress is made according to their current measurements, only for them to realize during final fittings that major alterations are needed. Unfortunately, alterations have their limits, especially for styles with boning or unique structures, which simply cannot be altered that much.
Here is what to do:
- Mention it when placing your orderYour plans and goals
- Aim to do alterations in the final 6 weeksIf you alter it too early, your body shape might still change afterward; if you alter it too late, you will run out of time.
- If your weight loss goal isn't met, be honest with your tailor so they have time to make adjustments.
The same goes the other way around: if you might gain weight (for example, if you become pregnant), tell them even earlier and pick a style with room for adjustments.
Suits
Grooms have much more time flexibility. Renting only requires 2 to 3 months before the wedding date, while custom tailored suits take about 3 to 4 months. Just remember to reserve time for alterations as well.
If the groomsmen are coordinating outfits, factor in shipping and alteration time for groomsmen living in other cities (see item 93 on the checklist).
Multiple outfits for Chinese weddings
If your program includes outfit changes (wedding dress + evening gown + toast dress, three outfits are common at Taiwanese wedding banquets), calculate the timeline and budget for each one separately:
- Main wedding gownUsually custom made or high end rentals
- Evening gowns and toast dressesMostly rented, with a much shorter timeline
And you need to includeOutfit change timeThis must be scheduled into the day's timeline (see item 39 on the list). Every outfit change takes at least 15 to 20 minutes, and the bride will be away during that time. You will really notice how far the bridal suite is from the main venue at times like this (see item 45 on the list).

Break in your shoes early
The dress length is altered based on heel height, sowear your wedding day shoes during alterations. Plus, make sure to break them in beforehand (see item 51 on the checklist).
