An American engagement session isn't a Taiwanese bridal shoot: don't expect one from the other's quote
This is one of the most common expectation gaps in a blended wedding. Both are called "pre-wedding photography," and what they produce is completely different.
What each one is
An American engagement session
- A 1–2 hour shoot on location
- Your own clothes, usually everyday but presentable
- Focused on natural interaction and a lived-in feel
- Often included in a photography package; typically $500–$1,500 standalone 💵
A Taiwanese bridal shoot
- A full day of shooting
- Studio plus location
- Multiple gowns, professional hair and makeup, styling changes
- The deliverable is a retouched album and large prints
Where the gap is
Take an American photographer's quote and expect a Taiwanese deliverable, and you'll be disappointed.
$800 in the American model buys one to two hours on location; in the Taiwanese model it doesn't even cover the rental of one gown. It isn't a question of who's more expensive. They're two entirely different services.
The reverse holds too: if what you want is natural, lived-in photos, going to a Taiwanese bridal company may get you a lot of posed setups you're not comfortable with.
So decide which you want first
- Want a Taiwanese bridal shoot: seek out a Chinese bridal company in America. Big cities (Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Houston) all have them; they know the process, have the gowns and have stylists
- Want an American engagement session: add it to your photography package, usually the best value
- Want both: entirely possible, but budget them separately
There's another money-saving option: shoot in Taiwan. If you have a trip planned, Taiwanese bridal pricing and quality are internationally competitive, and many couples do it while back for the marriage registration (see item 15 of the checklist).
When to shoot
6 to 9 months before the wedding. That timing exists because the photos get used for:
- Save the Dates (sent 8 months out, see item 36 of the checklist)
- The wedding website (see item 95 of the checklist)
- The welcome display on the day
So the shoot has to precede all of those rather than happening when it occurs to you.
One practical benefit
An engagement session has an often-overlooked function: it lets you work with your photographer once before the wedding.
You'll learn how they direct, whether you stiffen up on camera, and whether their communication suits you. And they'll learn your angles and habits. There's no time to find your rhythm on the wedding day; this is that time.
Seen that way, adding the engagement session to the photography package (the same photographer) is worth more than hiring someone separately.
